Practical Feline medicine: focus on elderly cats
Speakers
Professor Danièlle Gunn-Moore, Vicky Halls and Dr Sarah Caney
With almost half of the UK cat population over the age of 8, senior cats are becoming an increasingly important subset of our patients. Insidious and often confusing clinical signs mean that many illnesses are not detected until they are quite advanced. Fortunately, advances in treatment mean that the majority of diseases of the elderly are now very manageable leading to not only an improvement in quality of life but also length of life.
Our course will provide a complete A to Z of elderly cat care. Attendees will be empowered to revolutionise care of older cats in their practice through health screening programmes and improved advice to cat owners.
Hot topics to be covered include
Feline behaviour
- What are the typical issues an elderly cat has to face? When is a cat 'old'?
- What are the ideal indoor litter facilities for cats with cognitive dysfunction or arthritis?
- What's the best advice for owners of very dependent older cats?
- How should owners introduce new cats to an elderly resident?
- What behavioural advice should all owners of elderly cats be aware of?
- How should an owner place resources in a multi-cat home containing an elderly cat?
Feline geriatric medicine
- What 'cat friendly' tips are most helpful when seeing elderly cats?
- How can I set up geriatric clinics that really work?
- How can we help arthritic older cats with renal failure or other concurrent illnesses?
- How can I treat cognitive dysfunction?
- How can I diagnose and treat those frustrating triaditis cases?
- What's the best diet for a diabetic cat that has renal failure?
- So I've diagnosed cognitive dysfunction – what next?
- What's the best way of identifying the 30%+ of my elderly cat population that have chronic kidney disease?
Come to our course to find answers to all of these questions and more...
