The Elderly Cat: all you ever wanted to know!
Speakers
Dr Sarah Caney
This course will provide an update on successful care of the older cat. Elderly cats are a rapidly growing subset of our patients and our knowledge regarding their healthcare is growing at an almost exponential rate! This course will focus on providing practical tips for management of everyday cases. Data from real patients will be used throughout the day to illustrate the points made.
Topics to be covered will include:
- Introducing the older cat: when is a cat old? What conditions are most common? What routine healthcare is justified and why?
- Cat friendliness for older cats: what tips work best when handling, hospitalising and sampling these cats?
- Feline hypertension: what’s a normal BP reading and what’s too high? How can I get a BP reading I can really trust? How can I spot signs of hypertension by looking at the eyes?
- Weight loss in the older cat: what’s going on when the clinical examination and T4 are normal? What’s a logical approach to diagnosis (and supportive care) in these patients? What’s occult hyperthyroidism and how is this diagnosed?
- Renal disease: is early diagnosis of renal disease possible? What does an early diagnosis gain? What other tests should I be doing in my renal patients?
- Renal disease: what constitutes gold standard long-term care? If finances are limited, what are the most important treatment and monitoring priorities?
- Hyperthyroidism: how can I avoid post-treatment hypothyroidism and why is this so important? What new treatment options might I want to consider?
To find answers to all of these questions and learn some new skills to take back to your practice, come to our course….
All delegates attending this course will receive a complimentary copy of the newly revised and updated book ‘Caring for a cat with chronic kidney disease’ by Dr Sarah Caney.
